After a week of severe storms that has hit the Grand Canyon, a storm Wednesday took out some of the Bright Angel Trail. National Park Service spokeswoman Kaitlyn Thomas says “we received quite a bit of rain (Wednesday) very rapidly.” She says because of that, “there was a small washout of the Bright Angel Trail which was enough to cause us to reroute the trail for our mules, who are taking the South Kaibab Trail now.” Thomas says the trail is still open to hikers. Earlier this week a storm led to two people being struck by lightning on the same trail. If you plan to hike the South Rim in the next week or so, keep your eyes on the weather because it can change in an instant in the summertime.
