A HERITAGE society has called for greater action to tackle graffiti as city centre bus shelters have been repeatedly targeted by vandals. Photos show the listed bus shelters outside the Royal Pavilion in the Old Steine in Brighton plastered with new graffiti tags across the windows. Writing on Twitter, the Brighton Society said the city council is losing the battle to protect heritage and has called on the public to help catch vandals in the act. Sussex Police said the photos of the new graffiti tags have been passed to the relevant team . The listed Pavilion bus shelters have been graffitied again. St William, part of the Berkeley Group, wants to build several high-rise blocks of flats at the site between Marina Way, Roedean Road and Boundary Road. The developer intends to transform the area, building between 600 and 700 apartments, 2,000sqm of office space and a public square - and has launched a second public consultation, which runs until March 5. Heritage societies and campaign groups have written an open letter to St William urging the developer to reconsider its plans. They say the area is unsuitable for tall buildings because of its situation on a cliff, its proximity to heritage assets - such as the Grade 1 listed Kemp Town Estate - and the relative height of other buildings.

If plans are given the go-ahead, a nine-storey hotel with 221 bedrooms would be built behind the seafront landmark. Exhibition and conference halls would be demolished to make way for the Cannon Place Hotel.

But 19 neighbours have written to the council to object to the scheme which also faces opposition from the Regency Square Area Society and the Brighton Society.
