Nearly 13 months after COVID-19 abruptly shut schools across Illinois, almost all of the state’s 1.9 million public school students are back in the classroom and receiving some form of in-person instruction.
Almost all of Illinois’ roughly 850 school districts, or 96%, report having students back in the classroom at least part time, while 46% of districts have resumed in-person learning full time. Just 4% of school systems are still offering only remote instruction, according to newly posted data on the Illinois State Board of Education website.
Peoria Public Schools returned to a full, five-day week of in-person classes March 1, with one caveat the school day is shortened because of transportation issues.
PEORIA The mother of a Peoria High School sophomore says she s worried for her son s safety in the wake of an incident last week where the boy had an unloaded handgun pointed at him.
Shondrica Farmer said her son, 16, was at school on Wednesday when a younger boy, 14, pulled a handgun on him.
A struggle ensued, and the gun fell to the ground. Another student, not involved in the fight, grabbed the gun and handed it to a teacher. There were no reported injuries during the incident, according to police.
Farmer wants to know how a handgun could have gotten into the school. It s harder to get food into the building, she alleges, than a handgun.
