Peoria Public Schools board president is strong advocate for children

He is a Peoria native with three children in Peoria Public Schools. PEORIA  A member of the Peoria Public Schools District Board since 2017, Gregory Wilson is taking over the gavel this year in his new role as president.  Wilson, who served as vice president last year, was elected by his peers to the position formerly held by fellow board member Doug Shaw.   “He s a young professional and a strong advocate for children. He just has an all-around good personality and good ideas,” said board member Martha Ross, who has been on the board for 20 years and was elected to serve as vice president this year.  

Everyone will have to wear masks in Peoria Schools this fall

PEORIA – Masks will not be optional when classes begin at Peoria Public Schools in August.  Universal masking is part of a many-tiered plan designed to keep students and staff safe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The district will also be promoting vaccination, physical distancing, COVID testing, contact tracing, enhanced cleaning and testing as part of their plan.  “As we continue to work with our local health department, we will begin the school year requiring that masks be worn by all individuals. We, along with the CDC and IDPH, understand that masking and physical distancing in our schools are key prevention strategies, particularly as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rise, said PPS Superintendent Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat during the board meeting Monday evening.

Southwest of Chicago, Steven Wrobleski is worried. School starts August 11 and he still has openings at LaSalle Peru Township High School. “We currently have a chemistry physics teaching position that we have zero applicants for right now. I am really concerned about how we’re going to be able to fill that position,” Wrobleski said. “Where are we going to find science and math teachers? There is angst over, ‘Are we going to find people, quality people? ”
