Peoria mayoral election recount delayed; Rita Ali still to be sworn in

PEORIA  The recount in Peoria s tight mayoral race has been delayed untilMonday, election officials said on Tuesday morning. The inauguration Tuesday evening of Mayor-elect Rita Ali is still scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in Peoria City Council chambers. That s because the discovery recount requested by candidate Jim Montelongo would not have halted that swearing-in, regardless of its result. In Illinois, a discovery recount does not in itself change the result of an election. Any discrepancies between the total in that recount of one-quarter of the city s precincts could be used in a potential court case if Montelongo seeks to have the results of his 43-vote loss overturned. He s previously said he s not sure if he ll contest the race, and was waiting on the results of the recount to decide.

West Peoria s July 4th parade canceled for 2021 due to pandemic

WEST PEORIA  For the second year in a row, West Peoria has called off its Fourth of July Parade. As with last year, the pandemic prompted the cancellation. The last parade, in 2019 featuring an appearance by Gov. JB Pritzker and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton  marked its 49th anniversary. What started as a small event with a few floats blossomed into an hour-plus event boasting more than 100 entries. Thousands of observers line the parade route, especially bag-toting kids eager to scramble for candy tossed from floats. However, the West Peoria City Council decided this week to cancel after consulting with the city s insurer and the Peoria City/County Health Department. The department s administrator, Monica Hendrickson, told West Peoria that she was wary of recent infection and hospitalization numbers related to COVID-19.

Peoria City Council approves land bank measure

PEORIA In two weeks, the city of Peoria could make history by having the first city-run land bank in the state. The council had the first reading Tuesday of a measure that will create the land bank that would manage the vacant, abandoned and tax-delinquent properties within the city limits. Council members could give final approval to the measure at their next regular business meeting on May 11. They initially had been asked to approve the measure Tuesday after a single night of discussion. However, multiple members wanted more community input and a public meeting is expected next week, though a date has not yet been set.
