Illinois digs out after snow storm Areas of the state are digging out after between 6 to 12 inches of snow with continued frigid temperatures and sub-zero wind chills. While many public schools have called for a snow day, there are some that are having students attend class remotely, as has been done most of the year because of COVID-19. Central Illinois village disbands police force The central Illinois village of Washburn has disbanded its police force. While there were issues with the costs of policing the 1,100 person community, the police chief told the Peoria Journal-Star that a recent bill putting new regulations on law enforcement was the last straw.

IN MEMORY Jack Ehresman, 87, Illinois’ greatest outdoors writer, died Dec. 30. An original inductee in the Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame, Mr. Ehresman covered the outdoors, sometimes with daily columns, for the Peoria Journal Star for 30 years and spread love of Illinois outdoors for decades in national magazines through pen names. Our careers overlapped briefly, but I’m honored to have received some of his memorabilia. Memorial donations may be made to Ducks Unlimited, the American Heart Association or Hooked on Fishing Park in East Peoria. His family plans a celebration of life in the future. WILD TIMES

Dixson, Gunn Honored To Be Featured Speakers At Peoria MLK Ceremony

Peoria Journal Star executive editor Romando Dixson, left, and Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Joshua Gunn are the featured speakers in Monday s 35th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Freedom March and Commemorative Service. Two men who have made history in leadership positions with prominent Peoria institutions will be the featured speakers for Monday’s 35th annual Martin Luther King Freedom March and Commemorative Service. Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Joshua Gunn and Peoria Journal Star executive editor Romando Dixson are the first Black men to hold their respective positions. Dixson says their appointments are noteworthy strides toward increased diversity and inclusion throughout society.
