WEED WAR: Lack of rain hinders Clinton salvinia battle

This was the response from Gladstone Regional Council to questions from The Observer as residents continue to live with the Weed of National Significance in their neighbourhood. A native of Brazil, Salvinia molesta is free-floating aquatic fern that rapidly multiplies to form dense mats on water surfaces which become a breeding haven for mosquitoes. The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Queensland lists Salvinia as a category three restricted, invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. Salvinia is a Weed of National Significance In Australia. It is regarded as one of the worst aquatic weeds in Australia because of its invasiveness, potential for spread, and economic and environmental impacts. It has been intentionally spread throughout the world as an ornamental pond or aquarium plant, and has escaped or been placed into waterways. Photo Ian Read
