Almost a third of international air travellers allowed to skip quarantine hotel, but government won t say why

Article content Almost one third of all air travellers arriving in Canada have been allowed to skip the mandatory stay in a government-approved quarantine hotel, a rate of exemption from the controversial COVID-19 control measure that could undermine its public health goals. About 88,000 arriving international air travellers were deemed exempt from the expensive hotel stay requirement, according to the most recent data from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The agency would not provide a breakdown of the reasons for these exemptions. We apologize, but this video has failed to load. Workers worried after COVID-19 outbreak leads to partial shutdown of GTA quarantine hotel

In late February, the federal government implemented new quarantine measures at airports that require all air travellers returning from non-essential trips abroad to isolate in federally-designated facilities for up to 72 hours while they await the results of a PCR test for COVID-19. The fine for refusing to go to a hotel is $3,000. Peel Public Health ordered the Hampton Inn & Suites to close partially on May 8. The public health unit has declined to say how many cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at the hotel.  But it says a closure, whether full or partial, happens when five or more people test positive for the novel coronavirus within the span of 14 days. The closure comes under Section 22 of Ontario s Health Protection and Promotion Act.

The U.S. company has applied to Health Canada for authorization of its kit so it can be used by Canadians in their homes. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week proudly announced a partnership with the Ontario government to provide more rapid COVID-19 tests for employees in key businesses, but it s still unclear at this time whether federal health officials believe there s a place for tests that can be obtained by all Canadians on pharmacy shelves and used at home.
