Live blog: Adrian Delia and Pierre Portelli testify in Daphne inquiry

Updated 6.13pm Yorgen Fenech donated money to the Nationalist Party and was also given stories about the party to leak to rival media, former PN executive Pierre Portelli confirmed under oath on Wednesday.  Portelli, who headed the PN’s media arm between 2017 and 2019, confirmed that Fenech’s Tumas Group was among firms that donated money to the party, albeit “not regularly”.  He recalled sending Fenech a text message in March 2019 asking the business magnate for help to process a donation that the PN needed to pay for workers’ salaries. Evading accountability – Kevin Cassar

Donald Trump was impeached again. This time for inciting an insurrection. The storming of the Capitol left five dead and 120 officers injured. Trump argued that the trial was unconstitutional. He could not be removed from office, the point of impeachment, since his term was over. If found guilty, Trump would have also been disqualified from holding any future office. If impeachment of a former president were unconstitutional it would provide a ‘January exception’, allowing presidents to commit any impeachable offence and evade accountability. The senate refuted Trump’s argument and the trial proceeded. Fifty-seven senators found him guilty, 43 acquitted him. The two-thirds threshold required to convict was not reached – and Trump was let off the hook, again.

Live blog: Yorgen Fenech saw presidential pardon draft before arrest

Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered as she was preparing for a full-blown exposé of a failed power station project, her son testified in court on Thursday. Matthew Caruana Galizia stood on a podium just metres away from the man who is charged with killing his mother during a tense sitting, which confirmed that Yorgen Fenech had been privy to the wording of a presidential pardon lined up for the middleman shortly before the businessman’s arrest. It was the first time that a member of the victim’s family was summoned as a witness in the compilation of evidence. Matthew Caruana Galizia revealed emails his mother had received in 2017 exposing the big financial problems faced by the Electrogas project. He provided evidence to show that Fenech was the project’s key contact with the government and claimed that other shareholders feared him.
