Canadian minister faces backlash for Barbados vacation

Canadian minister faces backlash for Barbados vacation Article by December 31, 2020 A Canadian politician is in hot water over his decision to holiday in Barbados for the Christmas season while at the same time urging Canadians to stay at home and resist the urge to travel. According to reports by the Canadian Press, Pierre Arcand of the Quebec Liberal MNA party was spotted on the island’s west coast with his wife, after issuing repeated requests not to travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the province of Ontario is currently in lockdown because of widespread COVID-19 cases. Defending his decision, the Canadian politician said he was COVID-free and he felt comfortable in Barbados which had managed to control the spread of the viral illness.

More Canadian politicians caught travelling during holidays amid pandemic

Dr. Allan Tupper, a political science professor at UBC, says leaving town at a time like this is the kind of thing voters won’t forget. “The public backlash in these things, it’s very difficult to come back from that,” he tells NEWS 1130. Tupper adds when it comes to Ontario’s Finance Minister, he’s surprised the Premier didn’t fire him. “It was unwise to leave at all as Minister of Finance. We’ve seen controversies in different countries already, deep controversies about people believing that actions of politicians and other leaders who go away on vacations and clearly violate the lockdown rules and so on to be very, very unpopular by people for good reason,” Tupper says.

Prince Albert MLA in Palm Springs, premier knows about it

Joe Hargrave is explaining his reasons for travelling across the border during the pandemic. The Prince Albert Carlton MLA and Minister of Highways said he has been in Palm Springs since Dec. 22 to finalize the sale of a personal property and to move personal items back to Saskatchewan. In a statement emailed to paNOW, Hargrave said: “The decision to travel was a personal choice to address personal business that I deemed necessary.” Hargrave said he did advise the premier of his travel and will be following all public-health guidelines including self-isolating in his Prince Albert home for 14 days upon his return to Canada.
