Gold Coast, Queensland travel guide and things to do: Nine highlights

THE ONE RESTAURANT In the middle of Broadbeach s glitzy Oracle Boulevard you ll find the Gold Coast s best restaurant, Social Eating House. This two chef-hatted bistro is home to three-time People s Choice Chef Of The Year Matthew Jefferson who oversees a menu of tapas dishes. Take a seat at the bar, and order a cocktail – it s like Brooklyn in here. See socialeatinghouse.com.au THE ONE MOTEL Only three minutes drive from the airport in overlooked Bilinga (yet the beach here is the widest and emptiest on the whole coast), La Costa Motel is an original 50s beach motel that s been lovingly restored to look like… a 50s beach motel. There s beach umbrellas outside and cruiser bikes set against white picket fences, and you can chat with your neighbour over a beer in the evening. See lacostamotel.com.au

The location fire (in red) in South-East Queensland covering 240,000 ha burnt from September to December 2019 in relation to National Parks . In new research published in Ecological Management and Restoration, School of Environment and Science honours student Isabella Smith used Geomorphic Information System (GIS) mapping to get a clearer view of where the fires occurred and which national parks, plant communities and threatened plants were likely burnt.
