Gretna vaccination clinic to close next week

GRETNA, Va. — After approximately two months of serving as a central vaccine hub for Pittsylvania County, the Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic will be shut down after its last clinic May 20. A decline in demand for the vaccine combined with more widespread access across our county led to the decision to close the clinic.   We were very pleased with the role the Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic played in providing so many of our residents the opportunity to get vaccinated, said Pittsylvania County Administrator David Smitherman. We think that the clinic served its purpose in making vaccinations, from scheduling the appointment to actually getting the shot, convenient for people in Pittsylvania County.

Chatham, VDH eye vaccine station at classic car shows

CHATHAM, Va. — Chatham-area car enthusiasts might soon have a convenient new opportunity to get vaccinated. At the May meeting of Chatham Town Council Monday night, the council and Scott Spillmann, director of the Pittsylvania-Danville Health District, initiated conversation around bringing a mobile COVID-19 vaccination unit to at least one of this summer s Classic Chevy Club cruise-ins on Chatham s Main Street. The first cruise-in since 2019 was scheduled for April 24, but the event was rained out. The season s premier event is now slated for May 22, and will continue every fourth Saturday for the duration of the summer. We would have a vaccination van off of Main Street, Spillmann said. If someone wishes to get the vaccine during the cruise-in, they could.

UVa: Areas of Va with higher vaccine rates more likely to stave off summer surge

The possibility of a summer surge of COVID-19 infections easily could vary across the commonwealth, based on vaccine acceptance. The communities in which a higher percentage of the population gets a shot of protection — such as Northern Virginia — appear to escape an uptick in cases, even in a worst-case scenario forecast. These scenarios are updated weekly by the University of Virginia’s Biocomplexity Institute and made public each Friday in a summary report, along with an analysis that’s dozens of pages long. “Vaccination rates are the driving factor behind the wide regional variation,” researchers wrote in Friday’s report.

FDA, CDC lift pause on J&J vaccine

The CDC and FDA announced Friday evening that Johnson & Johnson’s Jassen COVID-19 (J&J) vaccine could be administered again, following a thorough safety review. The departments recommended a pause on the vaccine’s use on April 13 after six cases of “rare and severe” blood clots were reported in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine. According to the CDC, teams at the FDA and CDC examined data to assess the risk of “thrombosis involving the cerebral venous sinuses,” which are large blood vessels in the brain, as well as other sites in the body such as the abdomen and legs. They also looked at thrombocytopenia, or low blood platelet counts.

Reinstating Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine could help with hesitancy

Reinstating Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine could help with hesitancy One health district director says it could help get more shots in arms Tags:  DANVILLE, Va – Local health leaders say restarting the Johnson and Johnson vaccine again could help with vaccine hesitancy. On Friday, U.S. health officials lifted an 11-day pause on COVID-19 vaccinations using Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose shot, after scientific advisers decided its benefits outweigh a rare risk of blood clot. Health districts like Pittsylvania Danville and Southside have had issues with transportation and broadband issues when it comes to distributing the vaccine. Its health district director says the pause on the J&J could be causing people to be more hesitant about getting vaccinated.
