BHUBANESWAR: The government has issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) for requisition of Tocilizumab and other drugs for treating Covid patients. The move follows recent formation of an expert committee of three senior doctors from SCB Medical College and Hospital for taking decision on the use of Tocilizumab on patients.
The SOP was issued after it came to the notice that some hospitals were submitting requisition for Tocilizumab without adequate information on patients’ condition, investigation reports and indications, creating problem for the expert committee to recommend its use and supply from the government source. It has also been noticed that some hospitals have not used this drug on patients for whom the requisitions were filed.

Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra, additional chief secretary (health), has issued this circular to all district collectors, municipal commissioners, chief district medical and public health officers (CDMPHOs) and chief of medical colleges and hospitals.
The SOP stated that some key points should be considered before the use of this drug like presence of raised inflammatory markers (inflammatory conditions). Patients should be carefully monitored post-Tocilizumab for secondary infections and neutropenia. BHUBANESWAR: The government on Friday formed an expert committee of three senior doctors of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, to take a decision on use of Tocilizumab for Covid patients on a case-to-case basis.
Originally, a rheumatoid arthritis drug, Tocilizumab is used in moderate to severe Covid cases so that the patient’s condition doesn’t worsen further. Bidyut Das, professor of rheumatology, will head the panel. The other two members are professor of pulmonary medicine Jyoti Pattanaik and associate professor of medicine PK Thatoi.
“When any prescription is made for a patient in a Covid facility with newer, restricted available drug, the prescription shall come as a proposal to seek opinion regarding the judicious use of the drug. Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], May 1 (ANI): The Odisha government on Friday constituted an expert committee for taking decision on the use of Tocilizumab and other new drugs for COVID patients at treatment facilities in the state.
The committee will examine and assess the proposal of use of such drugs on a case to case basis under the supervision of DMET.
Dr Bidyut Das, Professor, Rheumatology, SCB MCH Cuttack has been appointed as the Chairman of the committee while Dr Jyoti Pattanaik, Professor, Pulmonary Medicine, SCB MCH Cuttack and Dr PK Thatoi, Associate Professor, Medicine, SCB MCH Cuttack are the members of the panel.
