Northern Beaches Rotary Club makes a dent on mental health

Premium Content Subscriber only The new kids on the Rotary Club scene say they are making a dent in youth mental mental issues in the Mackay region. The female heavy Northern Beaches Rotary Club paired up with mental health organisation Headspace to sponsor two youth mental health first aid courses this year with another planned for May. Mental health first aid teaches responders to help people who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis. Often this can include depression, anxiety, psychosis, panic attacks and suicidal thoughts or behaviours. Club president Toni Slattery said the program was tailored to responses for youths aged 12 to 25 and was developed for adults who worked and volunteered with youth.

$500,000 lift to accelerate Pioneer Valley bike trail

Premium Content Subscriber only A $500,000 lift will help accelerate the design of the proposed Pioneer Valley Mountain Bike Trail. “This is a Labor election commitment which once completed will have 100km of track linking Eungella to Finch Hatton providing a great visitor experience for both families and serious trail riders, new jobs and $18m for the Mackay region’s economy,” Ms Gilbert posted. Ms Gilbert said Mad Mountain Bike Club riders were “very excited” to practise on the new facility and prepare for competitions. “Finch Hatton is planned as the trail hub with carparking, shuttle services, change rooms, an event space and possibly a cafe, in future stages,” she stated.

Citizens inform grassroots action plan to protect reef

Premium Content Subscriber only A flock of black cockatoos perched above as community members gathered at Mackay Harbour to celebrate a vision to protect the Great Barrier Reef. From Finch Hatton to Slade Point, more than 50 residents were at the launch of Reef Catchments Community Action Plan which covers the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday region. CEO Katrina Dent said it was created from a groundswell of ideas from the community about what were the priorities for (their) neck of the woods when it came to the reef. Ms Dent said funding from the Great Barrier Reef Foundation had allowed Reef Catchments to develop a road map to carry out the community s proposals.
