The Library of Congress tries to raise awareness of film conservation every year by adding 25 movies to the National Film Registry to preserve for posterity.
As usual, 2020 s lineup includes attention-grabbing Hollywood blockbusters of relatively recent vintage (
The Dark Knight and
Grease, The Blues Brothers, A Clockwork Orange), respected documentaries (
The Buena Vista Social Club, Wattstax, Freedom Riders), venerable silent films (
Kid Auto Races At Venice, apparently one of the few Charlie Chaplin movies not already inducted) and films from Hollywood s Golden Age, underground movies, influential but lesser-known films and early work from seminal directors.
The Dark Knight, Grease added to National Film Registry
The Library of Congress announced Monday that films including The Dark Knight, Suspense, musicals Grease and The Blues Brothers along with Sidney Poitier’s Oscar-winning performance in Lilies of the Field are among the 25 movies tapped for preservation this year.

This year’s inductees into the National Film Registry include a record number of female directors and filmmakers of color as well as a new crop of movies ranging from a silent short film thriller, classic musicals and an acclaimed Batman film.

The Dark Knight, Grease, The Blues Brothers, Shrek and more were selected for inclusion in the National Film Registry Monday by The Library of Congress.
ADVERTISEMENT Freedom Riders, The Hurt Locker, Mauna Kea: Temple Under Siege, The Ground, Buena Vista Social Club, The Devil Never Sleeps, The Joy Luck Club, Illusions, Losing Ground, Wattstax, Sweet Sweetback s Baadasssss Song, A Clockwork Orange, Lilies of the Field, The Man with the Golden Arm, Outrage, Cabin the Sky, With Cara and Camera Around the World, The Battle of the Century, Bread, Kid Auto Races at Venice and Suspense have also been added to the National Film Registry.
