Pickford School Building Project delayed

PICKFORD The Building Project for Pickford Public Schools has been delayed after the received bids came in higher over estimates.
Angela Nettleton, superintendent of Pickford Public Schools, released a letter regarding the situation. When the schools went out to bids in January, a variance of plus or minus 5% was expected, based on consultation from construction managers. As of early February, based on the bids received, the project was being over budget by approximately 40%. This was caused by several factors, including COVID-19-related issues interacting with the school’s rural geographic location.

As of Wednesday, data from the State of Michigan reported there have been 1,057 cumulative confirmed cases and 1,380 cumulative probables of COVID-19 in Chippewa County. There have been 33 deaths because of the virus.
On Tuesday, it was reported by the Chippewa County Health Department that 2,186 people have recovered.
Compared to last week’s totals, there had been 1,038 confirmed cases, 1,363 probable cases and 32 deaths due to COVID-19 in Chippewa County. Per the health department, 2,093 people had recovered from the virus.

School districts around the country have been struggling with substitute teachers, and that problem was exacerbated even more because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why is there a crisis? According to The School Superintendents Association, the answer comes right out of a basic economics text: increased demand coupled with a decrease in supply.
Geoffrey G. Smith of The School Superintendents Association explained in an article that the increased demand on the existing substitute teacher pool is due in part to higher requirements for in-service training for permanent teachers and generous teacher contracts that offer additional leave time during the school year.
