Low rainfall, extreme heat causing drought conditions on Vancouver Island, across B C

  VANCOUVER Most of southern British Columbia is experiencing a drought right now, and eastern Vancouver Island is among the hardest-hit regions. According to an information bulletin from B.C. s Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, most of eastern Vancouver Island is at drought level four. The Salmon River watershed in the Shuswap region of the Interior is the only other part of the province currently that high on the drought scale, which goes from zero to five, according to the ministry. At level four, adverse impacts on fish are very likely, the ministry said in its bulletin.

Wildfire Service has spent more than $95.4 million fighting fires this season, eating through more than 70 per cent of its annual allocated budget before the start of peak fire season. The forestry ministry provided the figures in a statement to CBC News on Wednesday. The wildfire service s total budget allocated for the 2021 fire season is $136 million. This figure is an estimate only, the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development said.

On a remote forestry road in northern B.C., a family keeps vigil. For the past month, members of Wilp Git’luuhl’um’hetxwit, a house group of the Gitxsan Nation, have spent day and night watching over a gate that they installed here in early May. Its purpose is to control access to their Lax’yip, or territory, and ensure any logging that happens there is done with consent from the house group.
