In late March, Kaitlyn McMurray joined the ranks of Canadians who lost a job due to COVID-19.
The single mom of an eight-year-old girl, McMurray relied on her part-time income as a child care worker to help pay her monthly bills. She had also been receiving benefits from the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability Program (SAID) due to a heart condition for which she is awaiting surgery.

Upon informing Social Services of her job loss, McMurray said she was told she’d have to apply for either Employment Insurance or the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). Having been approved for CERB, she said the province then told her she was making too much money so would be cut off from her provincial SAID benefits.
