The City police have intensified enforcement of curbs introduced by the government in view of the COVID-19 outbreak.
On the first day of the restrictions, the police initiated legal action against 972 people for violating the pandemic norms. While 195 people were booked under the Kerala Epidemic Diseases Ordinance 2020, as many as 774 others were cumulatively fined Rs. 3.87 lakh for failing to wear masks outdoor. As many as 37,825 were issued strict warning by the police for other violations.
City Police Commissioner and Inspector General Balram Kumar Upadhyay urged the public to cooperate with the restrictions and to leave their homes only for essential activities. Home delivery must be encouraged. While those working in shops must wear double-layered masks, the pandemic protocol must be strictly adhered to. Only parcels and take-away facilities will be permitted in hotels and restaurants.

The City police busted a major drug racket by apprehending three people, including two Tamil Nadu natives, with alleged possession of over 155kg of ganja on Tuesday.
The polling agents of the political parties can seek police security if they face any threat.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state police have beefed up security in the state ahead of the assembly polls and will deploy 59,229 cops on election duty. As many as 481 police stations in the state have been divided into 142 election sub-division for arranging security.
Apart from local police, officers from the Crime Branch, Vigilance, Railway Police, Armed Battalion, Training centres, Fire and Rescue, Excise, Forest, Motor Vehicles Department and Marine Enforcement have also been deployed.
A total of 140 companies of Central forces have also been deployed. State Police Chief Loknath Behera said 1,694 patrol teams, each consisting of a videographer, have been formed to cover all the polling booths. In Naxal-affected areas, Special Operation Group and Thunderbolt have been deployed to provide security, he added.

ECI programme for voter literacy
Stern action would be taken against poll officials who do not act impartially, Chief Electoral Officer Teeka Ram Meena said on Thursday, adding that the cooperation of the public was essential for free and fair elections.
Mr. Meena was speaking after inaugurating the district-level Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities in connection with the April 6 Assembly polls in the State. Mr. Meena also released the logo.

The annual Attukal Pongala, billed the largest congregation of women, will be held on the premises of the Attukal Bhagavathy temple here in compliance with COVID-19 protocols on February 27.
Rituals such as ‘Kutthiyottam,’ ‘Vilakkukettu,’ and ‘Thalapoli’, held as part of the 10-day festival commencing on February 19, have been dropped from this year’s festival schedule. However, ‘Annadanam’ will be held at Amba auditorium adhering to the green protocol and COVID-19 guidelines, and food will be made available in packets.
