Company news: Nascentia Health recognizes employees with awards

Nascentia Health announced the recipients of the spring 2021 President’s Award and Heart of Home Care awards. These awards are given to employees who go above and beyond in their dedication to Nascentia’s foundational pillars and values.
Andrea Lazarek-LaQuay, Nascentia’s chief clinical officer, received the President’s Award. She leads Nascentia’s clinical team of nurses and other practitioners and truly stepped up to lead the firm’s response to the Covid pandemic over the past year. She managed the firm’s partnership with
Onondaga County to staff Covid testing centers for more than a year, and also spearheaded the county’s first at-home vaccination program. As a registered nurse, she stepped onto the front lines with her team to deliver critical Covid-related services to Central New York. She lives in Clay.

Syracuse, N.Y. Few restaurants on Marshall Street have enjoyed the success that King David’s has had over the years. Nader Hatem, the owner of the Mediterranean restaurant, had been serving his family recipes there since 1974, and it was doing better than ever in 2019.

A new movie filmed in Syracuse is out in time for Mother’s Day with a top score on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Paper Spiders,” a mother-daughter drama starring Emmy-nominated actress Lili Taylor (“Say Anything,” “Mystic Pizza”) and Stefania LaVie Owen (”The Carrie Diaries”), was released in select theaters nationally Friday (May 7, 2021). The film is not showing on the big screen in Central New York, but it’s also available today for rent or purchase on Video on Demand (VOD) / Digital platforms like Amazon and Apple iTunes.

James Altman.
James A. Altman, 57, of Baldwinsville, died Tuesday, according to his obituary.
Altman was a graduate of Henninger High School. He earned his associates degree from Onondaga Community College and completed his education at the University of Buffalo.
He was an architectural draftsman with Bennetts & Huysman Architects in Manlius.
Altman was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), but he maintained a positive attitude, his obituary said. He was very active as a member of the ALS Association, doing fundraising and advocacy.

ANNUAL WATCHFIRE CANCELED AGAIN: The annual Memorial Day Weekend event known as Watchfire has been canceled at the New York State Fairgrounds for the second year in a row. The Vietnam Veterans of America Central New York Chapter 103 announced on its website that the 2021 Watchfire will not take place due to New York state Covid-19 guidelines. The annual watchfire draws thousands to Syracuse to honor U.S. soldiers and veterans on Memorial Day weekend.
