A VACANT Carlisle city centre restaurant is due to get a new lease of life after lockdown. The former Pompeii Steakhouse, on Abbey Street, closed its doors for good last year after failing to recover from the lockdown restrictions. Its former owner cited a combination of fears over staff safety, problems with an insurance policy, ongoing rent demands and fewer paying customers, as a result of social distancing measures, as the reason that the business was no longer viable. Now however plans have been announced to rename the eatery Anatolia and turn it into a Turkish Restaurant and Meze bar.
Among COVID-safe measures, ball kids will be allocated to one of three lounges across Melbourne Park, instead of one big lounge.
Kids will no longer handle playersâ towels or drink bottles. They will handle tennis balls as normal but will be encouraged to use hand sanitiser. They donât have to wear masks.
Ball kids arenât paid but get a daily allowance for food and transport and keep their uniform (designed by Ralph Lauren) and other goodies, which last year included Apple AirPods, gift cards and backpacks.
Ms Mace said they were told to âhold on to your hatsâ because members of the public had tried to pinch the legionnaire-style cap with side flaps. âTheyâre hot property,â she said.

Virgin Media has said December 2020 was the busiest month on record for broadband traffic.
During that month alone, Virgin Media said customers consumed 84% more information than they did in February 2020.
It said customers downloaded 83% more and uploaded 92% more than they did before the Covid-19 outbreak.
Due to increased numbers working from home, Virgin Media said traffic on the network peaked at 4pm every evening.
It said this would usually have been much later in the night, when customers would return home from work. Our homes are once again our schools, colleges, offices, cinemas and gyms so the importance of reliable broadband connectivity has never been greater, said Paul Higgins, Vice President of Commercial at Virgin Media.
