From: 10 February 2021 After 6 months of planning, GFSL is about to introduce a series of environmentally friendly upgrades which will reduce carbon emissions by more than 2,300 tonnes. At HMP Bure near Norwich in Norfolk, they will reduce reliance on the existing electric load by 17% and save 79 tonnes of CO2 per year by installing rooftop solar panels. It’s due to be completed by the end of March 2021. A second project under way in Whitemoor Prison in Cambridgeshire uses ground based solar panels and is scheduled for completion in July.

The LED switching initiative for HMP Elmley prison in Kent is forecast to save the MOJ £115, 000 and cut 183 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The scheme complements another project in which GFSL will install nearly 5,560 new cell light fittings across 20 sites by March 2021.

From: 25 January 2021 Gov Facility Services Ltd (GFSL), has launched a project to upgrade the existing lighting in HMP Elmley to high efficiency LED fittings, saving the Ministry of Justice c£115, 000 and c183 tonnes of CO2 annually. This energy saving initiative is running alongside another project in which GFSL is working with the Ministry of Justice to install nearly c5,560 new cell light fittings across 20 sites by March 2021. This wider partnership project will reduce operating costs over the 20 sites by c£121,000 a year, saving c750,000 kWhrs and c168 tonnes of CO2.

Photo Credit: Boeing A Boeing-led Australian team and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) reported on Dec. 21 that the unmanned Loyal Wingman completed its first high-speed taxi test in preparation for the prototype’s first flight. Boeing test personnel monitored the aircraft’s performance and instrumentation from a ground control station to verify the functionality while the vehicle reached accelerated speeds. The uncrewed aircraft has been undergoing low-, medium- and high-speed taxi testing at a remote test location in Australia since October 2020. “Our test program is progressing well, and we are happy with the ground test data we have collected to date,” says Paul Ryder, Boeing Flight Test manager. “We are working with the Air Warfare Centre (AWC) to complete final test verifications to prepare for flight testing in 2021.”
