This story, as I first heard it, was amazing, and moving. It only grew more so as I went to write it.)
DEERFIELD – Paul Stacy was as large as life.
The 6-foot, 4-inch mountain of a man, it seemed, was the perfect bodyguard and driver for the 14th Dalai Lama, whose visit to the Pioneer Valley this past week marked in some ways an important milestone for the Tibetan community.
Yet Tiny – as he was known to an amazing array of people also lived life to the fullest right up to his death in 1994 after years of battling diabetes and its complications. And while that meant immersing himself in Buddhist meditation with the Dalai Lama and other teachers in his later years, it also meant drug and alcohol abuse earlier in life.

Clint Allen didnât start out destined for the Ivy League and business successes.
âNo one in my family went to college,â he told some high school students in 2017, âbut I was taught to work hard from the age of 11 when I pumped gas during the early morning shift from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m.â
A serial entrepreneur and a serial enthusiast whose passions were unbound by the constraints that limit many lives, Mr. Allen went from a Brockton cold-water flat to leading a Harvard rowing team to victories and running businesses large and small.
