If you re a defining figure of Crystal Palace s 20th century, there s a good chance you re celebrating a birthday on January 6th.
While most grumble their way through the month with little to look forward to - even less, perhaps, given the current situation - six memorable names from Palace history kick-start the year with a birthday, making January 6th one of the most congested days for producing club figures.
Birthdays include Terry Venables, who shaped the club in the 1970s and returned in 98, Dave Swindlehurst, one of our all-time top goalscorers, and Attilio Lombardo, widely regarded as one of the most talented players to have worn the Palace crest.
Government briefings have prompted surges in 999 calls during the coronavirus pandemic as demand for emergency services has fallen during traditional peak times.
The manager of the UK’s largest 999 call centre said usual call patterns have been turned on their head in 2020, with Friday and Saturday nights no longer the busiest periods of the week.
Cheryl Stewart, who runs the BT centre in Northern Ireland – which fields one in four of all 999 calls made in the UK – said the highest volumes are now experienced in the minutes after the late afternoon Government briefings.
Ms Stewart said as soon as the broadcasts end the phone lines would be inundated with concerned viewers reacting to comments from Prime Minister Boris Johnson, chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and others.

First-half goals from Callum Connolly and Joe Garner saw Town to what in the end was a comfortable 2-0 victory over Reading at Portman Road. Connolly’s low shot gave the Blues the lead in the third minute, then Garner headed the second on 27
Garner returned to the Town starting line-up with the Blues otherwise unchanged from the team which lost 2-0 at Middlesbrough last week.
The former Rangers man, a sub at the Riverside, returned to his usual lone striker’s role in Town’s now familiar 4-2-3-1 system with Martyn Waghorn moving back into the position vacated by Emyr Huws, who is out for the season having undergone knee surgery on Thursday.
