Side Lake residents share concerns about water levels

While trees and lakes are covered by two different branches of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Bill Schuster, a former NR Technician stationed at the agency’s offices in Side Lake, knows a thing or two about the up and down nature of water levels on the Sturgeon chain of lakes in French Township. “On the wall there, because people always used to come in and complain about the water levels, I had a sign (with a quote from Mark Twain): Whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting over,” said Schuster, who is currently the chair of the township’s board of supervisors. “That has been the deal in Side Lake for the 40 years that I’ve been there.”

San Diego s post pandemic economic recovery bogged down by lingering worker shortages

Print San Diego’s economic rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic remained sluggish in June, bogged down by lingering worker shortages as people take their time before returning to the workforce. The unadjusted unemployment rate for San Diego County ticked up to 7 percent in June from 6.3 percent in May, according to data released Friday from the state Economic Development Department. That’s not unusual. Jobless rates tend to rise in early summer as students enter the labor force during the school break and local government hiring slows. But since pandemic restrictions eased and businesses reopened, hiring gains locally have been slower than many expected despite rising wages and perks aimed at luring back workers.

County plans new public works facility south of Tower

Marshall Helmberger KUGLER TWP- A new $8 million facility here is expected to combine operations from the St. Louis County Public Works garages in Tower and Embarrass into one centralized location. The new public works “campus” is set for a construction start late next year and is expected to be built just north of the intersection of Hwy. 135 and County Rd. 26 on county tax-forfeit property, pending environmental review. “This location was chosen because it is at the geographic center of the road network that will be maintained from this new public works campus,” said James Foldesi, county public works director. “It will allow us to operate more efficiently and provide a higher level of service.”
