目前已知新冠病毒是透過細胞上的ACE2和TMPRSS2兩種蛋白附著而讓細胞感染，除肺臟有大量的此類蛋白表現，其他器官如腎臟、膀胱、男性攝護腺、陰莖及睪丸、女性子宮跟卵巢也都有大量蛋白表現，這類蛋白又受到雄性荷爾蒙（睪固酮）激素的調控，所以造成新冠肺炎男性感染機率較女性高，高齡男性也較容易在感染後死亡。
泌尿器官部分，董聖雍醫師提到腎臟感染新冠肺炎後會發生急性腎損傷，嚴重時甚至會發生腎衰竭甚至需要洗腎，對於攝護腺肥大病人來說，感染會造成下泌尿道症狀的惡化，主要症狀表現以頻尿、急尿及夜尿等情況為主，有些病人也會發生急性尿滯留狀況，嚴重時甚至會發生病毒性膀胱炎及膀胱出血等併發症。
