PANAMA CITY BEACH Local officials hope to improve the city s charter with the help of a new citizens committee. In a recent city council meeting, officials formed the Citizens Charter Review Committee to study the Beach s charter and suggest ways it could be improved before the municipal elections in April 2022. It s been 50 years since the charter (was) established, (and) it s never had an end-to-end review by the community, said Councilman Geoff McConnell, who will act as chairman on the group. I think this is a good thing to get citizens input on their constitution and decide what they want to do.

Officials have a plan to make them safer © NATHAN COBB/THE NEWS HERALD Panama City Beach renovates crosswalks PANAMA CITY BEACH Local leaders plan to spend about $250,000 to improve crosswalks on the Beach. According to Panama City Beach City Councilman Paul Casto, the renovations were sparked by a Panama City Beach Police Department study that identified about a dozen areas on Front Beach Road with an uptick in vehicle-pedestrian accidents. I think it s another example of tremendous growth and us having growing pains and having to keep up with the additional influx of tourists and residents, Casto said of what he believes leads to the majority of the crashes. We want to make sure we do all we can to keep our citizens and our tourists safe.

Panama City Beach Florida to improve dangerous crosswalks this summer

Information provided by Casto states that improvements are slated for 10 existing crosswalks located near Sandpiper Beacon Beach Resort, Pier Park, Sharky s Beachfront Restaurant, Origin at Seahaven, Runaway Island, Casa Loma, Days Inn by Wyndham Panama City Beach, M.B. Miller County Pier, Grand Panama Beach Resort and Churchwell Drive. A previous crosswalk near Richard Jackson Boulevard and the Shoppes at Edgewater also is being reinstalled. Casto added that the crosswalks will be repainted, press buttons will be replaced and flashing lights will be installed. He also said the city will begin to accept bids for the project next month and start construction sometime this summer. It will use about $250,000 from the city s community redevelopment fund to pay for the work.
