Documentary Is a Very, Very Broad Show : Sheffield DocFest Chief on 2021 Lineup

As with so many festivals, it’s easy to feel a little overawed when first glancing at the full program of films on offer at Sheffield DocFest (June 4-13). Despite the challenges of programming during a pandemic, the Sheffield team has pulled together an impressive lineup of 78 features and 88 shorts in its films program.

Eisner/Lauder New Views Documentaries and Dialogue Series The 2021 Eisner/Lauder New Views Documentaries & Dialogue Series: RITA MORENO: JUST A GIRL WHO DECIDED TO GO FOR IT, and LFG. This year’s series of films tell the stories of trailblazers fighting for representation and gender equity. The stories and life’s work of Pauli Murray, Rita Moreno and the members of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team come together in this series to illustrate the past, present and future of the fight for gender equity in every aspect of American society from education to law, the arts to business, and sports to the pervasive gender wage gap. These films raise up the voices and stories of landmark litigation, breaking down barriers, triumphant success and the persistence and courage that move us towards a more just and equitable society. The series will be held virtually and will include post-screening conversations with the filmmakers.

Jane Crow: The Life of Pauli Murray

Guest: Rosalind Rosenberg is Professor of History Emerita at Barnard College, Columbia University. She is the author of several books including Beyond Separate Spheres: Intellectual Roots of Modern Feminism, and her latest, J ane Crow: The Life of Pauli Murray. Pauli Murray was the first African American to earn a JSD from Yale Law School and her legal work on the 14th amendment provided the groundwork for Brown v. Board and inspired Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s work with women’s rights and the 14th Amendment. Murray also struggled with issues of identity: by today’s standards, she would be considered transgender.
