Choreographed by the world renowned Penny Saunders, Shot in the Dark is a love letter to the arts in a time when the theaters have been closed but the ghost light is left on to illuminate the empty stage, just waiting for us to return and enliven the space once again.

Balancing act: How workers are adjusting to long-term unemployment

Before the pandemic, Daniel Ojeda was used to supplementing his income with unemployment benefits. A 29-year-old ballet dancer and choreographer, Ojeda works about half the year as a freelancer, when he s not on contract with Ballet Idaho during the fall and winter. Last summer, those freelance gigs about half Ojeda s annual income disappeared, as the curtain dropped and lights went out in theaters and studios.  Working in an arts industry decimated by the novel coronavirus, Ojeda, along with his colleagues at Ballet Idaho, have adapted and survived. Although, nearly one year into the pandemic, stages remain closed, and audiences are not permitted or, at the very least, ill-advised.

Others have been able to pivot performances online and resume at least some operations for their artists and fans. Here in Boise, many arts organizations are in the middle of performance seasons. Joining us to talk about how they re going about their business as COVID-19 continues to make large gatherings impossible is Opera Idaho General Director Mark Junkert, Artistic Director of the Boise Philharmonic Eric Garcia and Garrett Anderson who is Ballet Idaho s artistic director.
