In response to four legal claims of sexual harassment within the Orange County District Attorney’s office, Democratic Party of Orange County Chairwoman Ada Briceño today publicly called on the Orange County Office of Independent Review (OIR) to launch an independent investigation of the allegations.
The call for an investigation comes on the heels of President Biden and cities across Orange County proclaiming April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Of the call to investigation, Chairwoman Briceño stated:
“Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls upon all of us to be bold and take action. An independent review of the District Attorney’s office is needed to build the trust that all of us including Orange County’s victims of sexual assault and harassment desperately need.”

To round out Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, students from the University of Guam Social Work Program took charge of the Denim Day wave Wednesday with the help of Erica s House and the Guam Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Family Violence.
The Denim Day wave tradition stems from a court case in Italy in which a judge sided with the perpetrator in a rape case. In his ruling, the judge said there must have been consent in the incident since the victim was wearing tight jeans and would have had to have helped her perpetrator take them off.

“Although our candles may not stay lit, the fire burns on in our hearts,” said Camille High, organizer of the “Shatter the Silence” vigil at 16th Street Park. The wind kept blowing out the candles but not the resolve of the attendees.
High, a cofounder of Black in Bayonne, hosted the vigil in honor of sexual assault and domestic violence victims and survivors during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. High holds the event every other year or so to talk about the “uncomfortable subject” and hold space for those affected.

FREEPORT Animal lovers know the effects of interacting with animals to create calm.
Blending that with exercise is the mission of goat yoga, which brings people and animals together for a calming yoga experience that advocates say can improve sleeping habits, memory, mobility and improve survival rates after life-threatening diseases or trauma.
When Jen Montgomery of Galena decided to combine yoga with goats she did not do so through a scientific method but rather her own experience. She owns Galena Goat Yoga.
Montgomery used to work in the corporate world. After her job was downsized a few years ago, she took time to reflect on her life and her future.

Michigan State Police is announcing that Purses with a Purpose will be expanding statewide to benefit sexual abuse survivors.
Purses with a Purpose is lead by the Michigan State Police Women Leading Change employee resource group. The project was developed in 2019 by Trooper Andrea Tillman of the Cadillac post.
The purpose behind Purses with a Purpose is to gather purses and bags, and fill them with comforting items to donate to survivors of sexual abuse.
In 2019, Trooper Tillman received nearly 500 purse donations. But the project was paused in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“We saw amazing support from our co-workers and community members in 2019,” says Tillman. “Bringing the initiative to our employee resource group in 2021, and getting that backing, we easily increased our reach.”
