The town council has objected to plans that would see a chiropractor’s clinic converted into a dwelling as part of an ongoing saga. 3 Church Close was formerly the home of Chiros, now located on East Street. Following the move, Ian and Christine Waight submitted plans to convert the Grade II property into a dwelling. Councillors objected to the plans on the grounds of parking and potential covenants on the property. Councillor Barbara Long said that parking in the area was “getting a bit ridiculous”. She said: “There seem to be only two parking spaces being allowed for the dwelling they’re going to create and it’s going to have at least five bedrooms. Of course, it’s in the town centre so they don’t need to have full parking there which I think is getting a bit ridiculous with how many residences are being granted in the town centre.
Among their many duties, one of the most important roles of councils is to decide on planning applications. Whether it’s at a town council level, where decisions are made on whether or not to object to the plans, or at a borough council level, where plans are considered and approved, there are always major decisions being made over what can be built in your area. Some of these decisions are bigger, and more controversial, than others. Here are some of the big planning decisions that are still up in the air:
Bilbao Court Flats Plans to build nine flats on the site of former garages in Bilbao Court have raised concerns over the availability of parking and landscaping in the local area.
Andover Town Council is to investigate the future of its offices in the town centre. The council is looking into a range of options, including serviced office space in the town centre or at Test Valley Borough Council’s (TVBC) offices, occupying a shopfront in the high street or becoming fully remote. Officers had prepared a report into some of these options, but have now been instructed by councillors to investigate further possibilities ahead of a decision that needs to be made before October. At present, Andover Town Council occupies offices just off the High Street, which were closed in March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.
Markets are a place where you can get everything. Be it fresh produce or homemade goods, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. But in future, you could also get a dash of town politics at the market, as Andover Town Council considers plans to operate a ‘councillor surgery’. Members of the council would be available to talk to in their gazebo, whether that’s to answer questions, complaints or anything else the public wants to know. The plans are currently being formulated, and will be brought to full council for approval in future. The initial plan for the council to have a presence at markets was raised previously, and has been delayed due to the Covid pandemic. It was raised again at a meeting of the Assets & Communities Committee at their meeting on Tuesday, April 13.
