Debate now swirls over long-time beach feature, amid calls to bar access

May 13, 2021 The Barbados Government has stepped in to address cries from some sections of the public to close access to that area of Brighton Beach, off Spring Garden, St Michael popularly known as The Hot Pot. The state’s intervention followed pleas from several Barbadians including the father of the latest person to die from drowning while bathing in the vicinity of the popular bathing spot. A “danger” sign has existed for sometime now, warning members of the public “Do not swim here – strong current.” The body of 21-year-old Jovonni Moise of Dash Valley, St George washed ashore on Monday after he disappeared while bathing there with friends the day before.

Ex-LIAT workers to get one-off $2,000 payment and additional help from Barbados Government

May 6, 2021 LIAT’s Barbadian ex-workers on Wednesday described a relief payment from the Mia Mottley Administration as a lifeline, some 400 days after being sent home by the Antigua-based carrier without a cent in severance. Former pilot Neil Cave, who has been spearheading the group’s struggle for severance and other entitlements, said the assistance offered during a meeting Wednesday with Prime Minister Mottley would help avoid them “going further into the abyss”. He told Barbados TODAY: “I just feel relieved because the suffering of the workers was really getting to a dangerous point, to the point of no return for some…and so it could not have come a day sooner; and I am just extremely grateful that the Government has decided to put the suffering to an end for now.

Retired Judge says Inniss got the 'light end of the stick'

Retired Judge says Inniss got the ‘light end of the stick’ Article by April 28, 2021 A retired High Court Judge in Barbados is describing the 24-month sentence of former Cabinet Minister Donville Inniss on fraud and money laundering charges as a light escape. Justice Christopher Blackman, who is also a retired Appeals Court Judge, was this evening responding to the verdict which was handed down to Inniss by Judge Kiyo Matsumoto today in the Eastern District Court of New York. “In all the circumstances, the sentence was not excessive. Anything more than that might have been heavy-handed. He has come off at the light end of the stick,” Justice Blackman told
