The springtime COVID-19 outbreak on Cape Cod remains a deep and urgent worry for officials in the region, particularly given the rising presence of more highly infectious variants across the country.
One day after U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said the B.1.1.7 strain is now the most common lineage in the United States, Cape Cod elected officials and health experts said that variants of the virus have played a role in driving up the area s case counts.

Cape Cod, Martha s Vineyard and Nantucket are going through what a local public health official described as impressive case spikes, but local business leaders say the region is primed for a record-breaking summer tourism season on the other side of this third major wave of COVID-19.
Vaira Harik, of the Barnstable County Department of Human Services, last Thursday said the Cape Cod and the Islands are suffering disproportionately higher case rates of COVID-19 compared with the rest of the state.
Barnstable County has seen about 97 new cases per day, while Martha s Vineyard and Nantucket are each confirming about nine new cases each day, she said.
Health officials on Cape Cod are continuing to monitor a jump in COVID-19 cases in several towns.
The outbreak started on the Mid-Cape and has now spread to parts of the Upper and Lower Cape. Officials believe that the spike in cases is linked to the emergence of several variants of the virus in the region.
This third wave of cases seen in Barnstable County is being described as âmountainousâ compared to the rest of the state.
Given that case numbers continue to increase, Governor Charles D. Baker Jr. urged residents to celebrate religious holidays such as Passover and Easter with caution. He said people should not be âthrowing caution to the wind,â even as many people across the state are getting vaccinated against the disease.
