Picture: Google Street View Two roads in the Barnet area are due to temporarily close from Monday for roadworks. Notices from Barnet Council in this week’s edition of the Barnet Borough Times detail the closures that will affect Queens Parade Close and Cheviot Gardens. Queens Parade Close is due to be shut to traffic at its junction with Hollyfield Avenue, while the one-way system in Queens Parade Close, between Colney Hatch Lane and Hollyfield Avenue, will also be suspended while a new electricity connection is installed.

By-elections for Barnet Council will be held in May A list of candidates has been revealed for the upcoming by-election in Edgware. Voters will go to the polls on Thursday, May 6 to elect a successor to long-serving Tory councillor Brian Gordon, who died in September last year. Local elections were postponed following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, amid concerns over its impact on campaigning and voting. Indian and South African Covid variants on rise amid fears of community spread, Hancock says

CASES of Covid caused by the Indian and South African variants are on the rise, the Health Secretary has said.
Not all cases have been in people who have travelled abroad, suggesting there is already community transmission of the strains.

Matt Hancock told MPs that cases of the Indian variant have gone up to 103 from 77 on April 7, and from Friday India will need to go on the travel red list .
