‘This is for everyone who supported BLM’: Lesley Lokko wins RIBA Annie Spink Award
Author and academic Lesley Lokko has paid tribute to ‘everyone who came out in support of Black Lives Matter protests’ after winning the 2020 RIBA Annie Spink Award for Excellence in Architecture Education
Lokko, 57, is currently setting up the African Futures Institute, an independent postgraduate school of architecture in Accra, Ghana – the city where she grew up until she was 17.

The Scottish-Ghanaian professor founded the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa in 2015, which she ran for four years before becoming the dean of architecture at the Spitzer School of Architecture in New York.

The first AURA Istanbul Saturday Conference in 2021 will host architect, academic and author Professor Lesley Lokko. The lecture will explore a number of student projects that tackle issues of race, identity and gender in diverse and often divergent ways.
