Letter: Now is the time for us all to pull together

Cllr David Pighills MAY I use your esteemed Craven Herald to most sincerely thank the voters of Barden Fell ward who so overwhelmingly supported my candidature for Craven District Council after such a difficult time last year. My appreciation also goes to everyone for their hard work preparing for the elections on Thursday, May 6, and conducting the count notwithstanding the practical problems caused by the Covid 19 restrictions. Great credit is due to the returning officer Paul Shevlin and his team for a task so professionally performed. Looking to the future surely this is a time for politics and personalities to be put aside and with a single minded purpose ensure a healthy, viable and sustainable rural economy.

Voting closes at 10pm - and don t forget your face covering

Polling stations are open until 10pm VOTERS have until 10pm this evening (Thursday) to take part in Craven District Council and North Yorkshire County Council by-elections. Also taking place is the North Yorkshire police, fire and crime commissioner election and some parish council elections. By-elections are taking place in the Craven District Council seats of Barden Fell and Penyghent, and in the Ribblesdale division of North Yorkshire County Council. Normal elections to both councils have been suspended because of the Government consultation into local government reorganisation. All-out Pendle Council elections, as well as Lancashire County Council and police and crime commissioner elections, are taking place as normal, as the area is not undergoing local government reorganisation.

Residents in Craven will be voting on who they want to serve as the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire. There are also district by-elections in the Barden Fell and Penyghent wards, a county by-election in the Ribblesdale Division, and parish council elections in Bolton Abbey, Cowling, Kettlewell with Starbotton, and Linton. Craven District Council officers have been working hard to make sure polling stations are safe. Risk assessments have been carried out at all venues, and floor markings, signage and screens will be in place.

Police establishing circumstances of PCSO photo hiking with others | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

WEST Yorkshire Police is looking to “establish the circumstances” surrounding a picture that appeared to show that a PCSO had gone on a day trip hiking with seven other people. The PCSO (914), who did not have their name on their Twitter profile but is an Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) officer covering Bowling and Barkerend, shared a tweet on April 14 about a hill climb she had undertaken. The tweet – which received 19 likes and two replies – said: “Rest day well spent. Walking with the work family. I’m stiff as a board now.” It included the hashtag “Simon’s Seat”, which indicated the group had climbed to the popular summit of Barden Fell, in Wharfedale.
