Covenant Health parent company of Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge received its first shipment of the Pfizer/BioNTech (mRNA vaccine) COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday, Dec. 17.
The first round of the COVID-19 vaccine distribution will be offered to employees working in environments that are considered high risk or high exposure to COVID-19, according to a news release. Receiving the vaccine is voluntary for staff.
The vaccine will be administered on a planned schedule at all Covenant Health acute care facilities. The vaccine also will be available for home health employees and employees who work in long-term care facilities. These East Tennessee facilities include, in addition to MMC:

East Tennessee hospitals received the first shipments of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine on December 17 and are making plans to get high-risk staff members vaccinated.

Covenant said in a press release that it will offer it to employees that are at the highest risk of exposure to COVID-19. The vaccine is voluntary for all staff members.

Covenant Health, which includes Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, received its first shipment of the first approved COVID-19 vaccine in the United States on Thursday.
It’s the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. That’s a new type of vaccine, a messenger RNA, or mRNA, vaccine. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved an emergency use authorization for the vaccine on Friday for patients 16 years old and older.
The first round of the vaccine will be offered to Covenant Health employees working in environments that are considered high risk or high exposure to COVID-19.

Cumberland Medical Center says it is prepared to meet the health care needs of the community â both for treatment of COVID-19 and for other conditions that need hospital care.
âWe remain prepared to meet the medical needs of the community and have the ability to collaborate with other Covenant Health hospitals if additional services are needed,â David Bunch, CMC chief administrative officer, told the Chronicle this week.Â
âCumberland Medical Center is open as usual to provide safe care for our patients and continues to take extra precautions to keep patients, employees and visitors safe in all of our care settings,â he added.
