Jim Whitehouse As a general rule, I abhor invasive species, whether animal or vegetable.  Whoever thought it was a good idea to introduce starlings and kudzu to these shores? Who likes Asian bittersweet vines and garlic mustard plants? Stinkbugs, Burmese pythons in the Everglades, jump-in-your-boat-and-slap-you-silly carp the list goes on and on.  But… I have a certain grudging fondness for some invasive plants.  I know the European plant that we call myrtle, periwinkle or vinca minor is an environmental no-no, but as it carpets part of the woodlands next to my house, I must say I prefer it to poison ivy. It’s pretty stuff with its shiny leaves and purple flowers. And then there is honeysuckle.
