The recently launched web portal for the payment of municipal taxes by Karachiâs District Central has already collected Rs5.1 million in a few weeks, and this revenue used to go to someone as extortion, said Sindh government spokesman Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday.
Wahab, who is also the chief ministerâs adviser on law and environment, was addressing a ceremony that was organised to inaugurate a gymkhana in the North Nazimabad neighbourhood of the city.
He said that the taxes being collected by the Central District Municipal Corporation (DMC) were not in hundreds of thousands of rupees but Rs500 to Rs1,000 â the difference being that in the past these taxes had gone to someone as extortion.

Murtaza Wahab asks Karachiites to help govt drive for developing city

Sindh government spokesman Barrister Murtaza Wahab has appealed to the people of Karachi to join the provincial administrationâs campaign to develop the city through improving its civic infrastructure.
Wahab, who is also the chief ministerâs adviser on law and environment, made the appeal on Saturday while speaking at the inauguration of Cliftonâs neighbourhood park after its renovation.
He said that understanding the problems of Karachi, the Sindh government has been trying to carry out development works, so the people of the city should join hands with the administration to strengthen the drive for developing the provincial capital.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said Karachi had in the past witnessed incidents of terrorism, but the Sindh Police, the Pakistan Army and the Sindh Rangers joined forces to restore law and order in the provincial capital.
He stated this on Friday as he attended a ceremony held at the Chief Minister House to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Sindh Police and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation for the installation of 10,000 security surveillance cameras in Karachi under the Sindh Safe Citiesâ Authority.
Speaking on the occasion, Shah recalled that the meetings of the provincial apex committee had held a detailed discussion to establish the Safe Citiesâ Authority in the province.
