Hunting for a Giant Black Hole, Astronomers Found a Nest of Darkness
No Gargantua dwells at the heart of stellar cluster NGC 6397. Instead, a few dozen smaller black holes seem to be swarming around in there, throwing their considerable masses around.
The stellar cluster NGC 6397, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, is 13 billion years old and contains about 250,000 stars, all of them old, small and dim.Credit.NASA, ESA, T. Brown, S. Casertano, and J. Anderson

Two astronomers recently went looking for a monster black hole. They sifted reams of data from the most powerful telescopes on and above Earth for any sign of an invisible object hundreds of times the mass of the sun in a distant cloud of stars known as NGC 6397.
Astronomers Find A Star Cluster Filled With Numerous Small Black Holes
Though most star clusters have a black hole at the center of their systems, astronomers were surprised to see a new cluster that actually had several small black holes in the middle rather than one large example of the mysterious space phenomenon.
According to
Space.com, researchers came across the discovery after studying the movement of stars in the NGC 6397 using NASA s Hubble Telescope and the European Space Agency s Gaia spacecraft. The cluster is around 7,800 light-years away from earth.
The data suggested that the hidden mass at the cluster s center, known as the central dark component, is filled with at least one intermediate black hole, as well more stellar-mass ones.
