The song featured in Oh Yes We Are!, Perth theatre’s four-scene mini-panto intended for small groups in a promenade performance, after the first lockdown made its Cinderella, on a conventional stage, impossible. But just as rehearsals were due to begin, new restrictions forced it online.

One man who got an insight into the man off the pitch was Barrie Hunter, who stepped into his shoes during a two-and-half week run of the play, Smile, which hit the Dundee Rep earlier this year. The actor, from Broughty Ferry, said he was  “saddened” to hear of his death. And he said he hoped there would be an opportunity to get Jim’s story back on the stage before adding that the play had been a “labour of love”.

As the pandemic drags on, the future of theatre seems bleak – and it’s getting bleaker every day. But even though culture is in crisis, still the creativity keeps coming. The team at Dundee Rep Theatre are in the middle of presenting their four-part digital Christmas offering, Shine On, which ends on January 6. Andrew Panton, artistic director of Dundee Rep Theatre and joint CEO of Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Centre Ltd, says that the past few months have been a “really challenging time” for many.
