COVID-19 News: 'Do not attend,' Barrie police chief on anti-lockdown protests

BARRIE, ONT. Barrie s police chief urges residents to stay home and avoid participating in an anti-lockdown protest planned for Saturday in the Sadlon Arena parking lot. This event is unlawful and irresponsible and is definitely not supported by the Barrie Police Service, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and the City of Barrie, Chief Kimberley Greenwood said in a pre-recorded video posted to YouTube. The protests bring hundreds of people together, many not wearing face masks or social distancing as per provincial requirements. Anti-lockdown demonstrations had been occurring on Saturdays at Meridian Place until the city installed fencing to deter the large crowds. In response, the organizer moved the event to Centennial Park.

One man arrested in weekly anti-lockdown protest in Barrie

BARRIE, ONT. Despite having their typical gathering place blocked off, hundreds still turned out in downtown Barrie Saturday to protest the provincial government s COVID-19 restrictions. One man was led away by four police officers from the protest, which started near the city s waterfront. There was one arrest in a crowd of mostly peaceful people, said Inspector Rich Johnston of the Barrie Police Service. There was an individual causing a disturbance to the point there were some concerns for everyone around. The protestors first gathered at the fenced-off Meridian place beginning at noon Saturday. The city closed the site earlier in the week to prevent public gatherings.
