There was no breach of ethics in connection with the appointment of Malta’s ambassador to Ghana, the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life has concluded.
Standards Commissioner George Hyzler had received a complaint filed by Anthony De Bono – former Maltese ambassador to Jordan appointed in 2010 – concerning the appointment of Jean Claude Galea Mallia as Malta’s Honorary Consul in Ghana and, later, High Commissioner to the same country.

Though her appointment as the new Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General is subject to the approval of Parliamentary Public Appointments Committee, the general public is overly satisfied with the choice of Martha Chizuma made by President Lazarus Chakwera.
According to Secretary for Justice and Solicitor General, Reyneck Matemba himself the immediate past ACB director general there were 37 individuals who applied for the job from which 10 were shortlisted for the interviews and the best three candidates were chosen.
From the three, President Chakwera has chosen Chizuma, who was the Ombudsman of Malawi where she created a niche as a tough as teak public officer.
After last week’s discourse re: “Indecisiveness as the hallmark of President Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership this far”, it was a pleasant surprise for many to see Chakwera in action.
Whether the action was just or unjust, legally tenable or untenable or whatever, Chakwera took action.
As I had argued last week, it is only by trying and /or doing – let’s call it experimenting, that lessons are learnt. Remember that had Thomas Edison not tried and at first, failed, he would never have invented the light bulb.
I, therefore, won’t scapegoat Chakwera for the controversy that has followed his rescinding Linda Kunje’s and Jean Mathanga’s appointments as commissioners of the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec).
