I applaud the plans to revamp the St Nicholas Square and the area adjacent to the Mercury and Jumbo. But in reference to Brian Light’s letter (Gazette Letters, May 18, “Jumbo plan for a cultural quarter”) we should tread carefully over how much is allocated from the Government’s Town Fund to the Jumbo project. What is the Heritage Trust asking for and what do we get for our money? What are the credible visitor projections for each of the first five years? Before we get to the cost of the viewing platform, lighting and fitting out a café (another one!), let us see a firm estimate to supply and install the lift and the cost of its annual maintenance contract.

A town’s heritage museum may remain closed this summer, its chairman has warned, if maintenance work on its 500-year-old building takes longer than anticipated.
Trevor Ogden, chair of the Dereham Heritage Trust, said that work on restoring Bishop Bonner’s Cottage, which houses the museum, was ongoing.
“The town council has placed a contract for the remaining building work, and it is due to let us know what the timing is, but we haven’t got that information yet,” said Mr Ogden.
The museum has been closed since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020, and is typically open from May to September.

Work on the 117-year-old Grade II-listed Severn Bridge Junction signal box in Shrewsbury is now complete.
It is the largest operational mechanical signal box in the world, with the refurbishment its biggest in more than a decade.
The £250,000 project - carried out by Network Rail and MPH Construction and part funded by the Railway Heritage Trust - has allowed the entire three-storey building to be weather-proofed.
As part of the refurbishment the original single-glazed windows, installed when the building first opened in 1903, have also been replaced with new double-glazed units.
