Everhart Museum in Scranton begins monthly Second Sunday Folk Arts Series on cultural traditions

In partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts’ Folk and Traditional Arts initiative, the Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science, and Art is working to sustain cultural and artistic practices rooted in people’s histories, traditions, and everyday lives in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming counties. To share and educate the community on creative practices in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the Scranton museum has introduced the Second Sunday Folk Arts Series, which features a different folk or traditional artist each month. The first online presentation about Irish music with multi-instrumentalist Leo Schott premiered on Sunday, March 14 on the Everhart’s YouTube channel, where each future entry will debut.

ABOUT THE STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS JANICE AMAYA (they/them) Janice Amaya is an actor, theatermaker, and organizer based in New York City. There they have been working for years with organizations such as the New Sanctuary Coalition, Performance Space New York, the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, and Pipeline Theatre Company, to name a few. They are also a founding member of The Hummm, a theater collective whose aim is to democratize the experimental. Currently they are touring and leading virtual engagements with CARTOGRAPHY, a show that combines simple storytelling with interactive video technology to recount experiences of modern-day migration from a youth perspective and empowers viewers of all ages to share their experiences of searching for home. They are extremely excited to be back at the American Repertory Theater, where they trained at the Institute for Advanced Theater Training (Class of 2016).

Yunlin County breaks ground on glove puppetry art center 03/13/2021 04:42 PM CNA photo March 12, 2021 Taipei, March 13 (CNA) The Yunlin County government broke ground Friday on Taiwan s first art center dedicated to preserving the art of glove puppetry, and expects the center to open in May 2023. Glove puppetry represents part of Taiwan s image, and Yunlin is the hometown of glove puppetry, said Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan (張麗善) at the groundbreaking ceremony at the site in Huwei Township. The county has the largest number of registered glove puppetry groups in Taiwan 127 and three studios dedicated to the craft, Chang said, and hoped the center will help preserve and develop the traditional art and connect it with the international puppetry art world.

Mellon Foundation as a Program Officer in Arts and Culture, focusing on the current and emerging infrastructure and field-wide needs of artists and arts organizations. We are enormously grateful to Deana for her leadership of United States Artists during the past four years. She has done a magnificent job working with the board and staff to build a strong organization in support of individual artists, said Ed Henry, USA Board Chair.
