The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology has announced the annual Tamil Nadu Scientist Awards (TANSA) for 2019 under the various Science categories.
Three professors from the University of Madras have been chosen for the awards in the mathematical, physical and medical sciences categories.
R. Ravanan, joint director of Collegiate Education, Chennai region, has been selected for the award under mathematical sciences. An alumnus of Presidency College he also served as professor in the statistics department of the college, which is affiliated to the University of Madras.
BU develops portal for exams

Bharathiar University has developed an exclusive portal to conduct examinations online and candidates who have registered for end semester and arrears examinations for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in affiliated colleges, departments of the university and Post-Graduate Centre should take the examination on the portal.
According to a press release, the examination will be held from May 10. Candidates should register, download question papers, and upload answer sheets on the portal. The details are available on the university website. Candidates can contact the principals of the respective colleges and university department heads.
Coimbatore: The district logged a new high of 1,441 fresh Covid-19 cases on Sunday, taking the tally to 81,033. The number of active cases also shot up to 7,708 on the day, even as 1,395 patients were discharged from various treatment centres. The number of recovered patients now stands at 73,840 in the district.
According to an official source, only 4,038 of the 7,708 active cases are indigenous to the district, while the remaining 3,670 are outsiders who came for treatment.
The death toll, meanwhile, rose to 724 with a patient succumbing to the virus.
As per the district administration report, the city corporation area has become a Covid-19 hotspot by recording 63.92% of the total cases on the day. Sulur block accounted for 7.67% of cases and Thudiyalur block 5.70%. District collector S Nagarajan has instructed officials to focus on the urban areas to contain the virus spread.

COIMBATORE: Residents and traders in the vicinity of Bharathiar University squirm whenever they spot a new face in the locality these days. The reason? The claim the patients taking treatment in the Covid care centre inside the university venture out frequently.
Residents of Kalveerampalayam and IOB colony fear that people coming out of the care centre may spread the infection. Five persons died of various causes in Kalveerampalayam and its surroundings on Wednesday. Also many people in the neighbourhood have tested positive. What adds to our fears is the constant movement of people from the care centre, says a pharmacist.
