India allowed telecom operators to conduct trials for fifth-generation networks, taking first steps towards the rollout of the high-speed 5G technology in the worldâs second biggest telecom market by users.Bharti Airtel Ltd., Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., Vodafone Idea Ltd. and MTNL have been allowed to conduct 5G trials for six months, including two months for procuring and setting up equipment, according to a statement by the Departm.

The duration of the trials, at present, is for a period of six months. This includes a time period of two months for procurement and setting up of equipment.

Each TSP will have to conduct trials in rural and semi-urban settings also in addition to urban settings.
The Telecom Department on Tuesday gave permission to telecom service providers (TSPs) to conduct trials for use and application of 5G technology. The applicant TSPs include Bharti Airtel Ltd, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, Vodafone Idea Ltd and MTNL. These TSPs have tied up with original equipment manufacturers and technology providers which are Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-DOT, Ministry of Communications said in a release, adding that Reliance Jio will also conduct trials using its own indigenous technology.
NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecom on Tuesday approved applications of telecom companies Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and MTNL for conducting 5G trials but none of them will be using technologies of Chinese entities. The list of telecom gear makers approved for trials include Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, C-DOT and Reliance Jio s indigenously developed technologies. This means that Chinese gear makers will not be part of the 5G trials. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) approved today permissions to Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) for conducting trials for use and applications of 5G technology. The applicant TSPs include Bharti Airtel Ltd, Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd, Vodafone Idea Ltd and MTNL, DoT said in a statement.
Telecom stocks were trading with losses, with the S&P BSE Telecom index falling 10.87 points or 0.78% at 1377.52 at 13:48 IST. Among the components of the S&P BSE Telecom index, Reliance Communications Ltd (down 5.2%), OnMobile Global Ltd (down 3.29%),Indus Towers Ltd (down 2.61%),Vodafone Idea Ltd (down 0.83%),GTPL Hathway Ltd (down 0.68%), were the top losers. Among the other losers were Bharti Airtel Ltd (down 0.62%), Tata Communications Ltd (down 0.35%), and Tejas Networks Ltd (down 0.08%). On the other hand, HFCL Ltd (up 3.09%), Vindhya Telelinks Ltd (up 1.84%), and Sterlite Technologies Ltd (up 1.7%) moved up.
At 13:48 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 86.09 or 0.18% at 48632.43.

(Bloomberg) Indiaâs wireless carriers have avoided partnering with Chinese telecom players for 5G services, the fallout of a bloody border standoff between the neighbors, as they start trial operations in the South Asian nation.
Bharti Airtel Ltd., Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., Vodafone Idea Ltd. and state-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. have tied up with equipment makers Ericsson AB, Nokia Oyj, Samsung Electronics Co. and state-run Centre for Development of Telematics, the telecom department said in a statement on Tuesday. Reliance Jio will also conduct trials using its own technology. The trial duration will be for six months, including a two-month period for procurement and setting up of equipment.
