A major provision in President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill aims to address decades of discrimination against Black, Hispanic, Native American and Asian American farmers who have historically been excluded from government agricultural programs. The American Rescue Plan sets aside $10.4 billion for agriculture support, with about half of that amount set aside for farmers of color, and allocates extra federal funds to farmers who were “subjected to racial or ethnic prejudice because of their identity as members of a group.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture has faced accusations of racism for decades, but little has been done to address the problem of discrimination in farm loans. REGIONALâGas station coffee is about to level up at four NâWest Iowa sites that have come under new ownership.
Dyno Oil Co. gas stations in Hartley, Sanborn and Sibley were purchased by Storm Lake-based chain Brew Oil on Jan. 18. The chain also acquired the former Pit Row gas station in Boyden.
Operating as a one-stop shop, Brew locations blend typical convenience store products and prices with an added bonus of more spirits and in many cases a full-service coffee shop.
âItâs kind of like a quick-service restaurant, but weâre able to offer a great coffee experience,â said Richard McCollum II, Brewâs general manager. âItâs a whole different point of convenience to have good products at a good price and have quite a few necessities met in addition to the host of different beverages, coffee drinks and food stuffs that weâll have available for the community.â
On Friday, Piedmont Access to Health Services (PATHS) distributed a small number of COVID-19 vaccinations out of their brand new mobile unit, which is fully equipped to provide medical care to people where they are.
In what started as a project for a school-based health clinic, PATHS has been working on getting a mobile unit for more than a year now. The unit, which is fully equipped with a medical, lab and dental station, was originally considered to travel to different Pittsylvania County schools to offer care.
The mobile unit finally arrived on Thursday, March 4, and will allow PATHS to reach the communities they serve, including Danville, Pittsylvania County, Martinsville, South Boston and Boydton, in a whole new way.Â
