Restoration project aims to restore critical salmon habitat

PORT LUDLOW, Wash. (AP) A 32-acre area at Point No Point will undergo a habitat restoration led by the Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group that aims to restore critical salmon habitat.
The nonprofit, which was created by the Legislature and partners with groups on salmon restoration, is working with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, Kitsap County Parks and the Hansville community on the restoration project that will reconnect the Point No Point marsh to Puget Sound.
Mid Sound has been reaching out to various groups to get their input on the project, the Kitsap Sun reported.

The memorial gathering was to be at a spot that had been a favorite of Val s (our mom s given name). The way there was a winding, narrow, logging road climbing through the Cascade Mountains near Granite Falls in Western Washington State. A vista, probably intended as a turnout for logging trucks to pull off of the steep, narrow road to allow other vehicles to get by, was the chosen spot. The view was breathtaking.

The air temperature was 5 degrees above zero. The wind chill didn’t matter, because once Bill Chelmowski and Dan DeVaney climbed onto the airboat, they created more wind chill than nature did.
The two are members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crew that conducts the ice depth surveys on Lake Pepin every February and March.
“When we do the initial survey every season, we put in stakes and take measurements at every mile marker on the lake,” said Chelmowski. “That takes us about four hours.”
