After focusing on priority groups through April, Quebec has gradually opened up COVID-19 vaccination to the rest of the adult population, including people in their 40s and 30s over the last week. Though health authorities are worried about vaccine hesitancy as the campaign reaches younger age groups, the response has so far been positive on Sunday alone, almost 190,000 people booked appointments across the province. At a vaccination site in Montreal’s west end on Monday, those recently made eligible for their first dose spoke of getting the vaccine as a responsibility and a first step toward returning to how life used to be. “It’s to protect myself, and more importantly, to protect other people so society can become normal again as soon as possible,” said Hongtao Hao, a 41-year-old language instructor from Côte-des-Neiges.
